Every day, thousands of Cameroonians lose valuable items in taxis, markets, campuses, and buses. Based on data from WeFoundIt and surveys across Douala, Yaoundé, Buea, and Bamenda, here are the 10 most commonly lost items — and how to get them back.

1. Téléphones Portables / Mobile Phones (32% of all reports)

Unsurprisingly, phones top the list. With over 20 million mobile subscribers in Cameroon, phones are our most-carried and most-lost item.

  • Where they're lost: Taxis (42%), markets (23%), bars/restaurants (18%)
  • Recovery rate with WeFoundIt: 65% when reported within 2 hours
  • Tip: Enable Find My Phone and set a lock screen with your secondary number

The national ID card is the second most lost item. Unlike phones, CNIs are often found and turned in — but connecting them with owners was the challenge before WeFoundIt.

3. Portefeuilles / Wallets (12%)

Wallets with cash are rarely returned. But wallets with IDs and cards are returned more often — another reason to report quickly on WeFoundIt.

  • Recovery rate: 35% (higher if reward offered)
  • Tip: Keep a card in your wallet with your phone number.

4. Clés / Keys (8%)

House keys, car keys, office keys — they're small and easy to drop.

  • Where they're lost: Public transport (55%), dropped in streets (30%)
  • Tip: Attach a distinctive keychain and label with your number

5. Sacs à Main et Sacs à Dos / Bags (7%)

Bags are often left behind in taxis or at market stalls. The good news: they're highly identifiable and often contain contact information.

  • Recovery rate: 48%
  • Tip: Place a business card or label inside your bag with your contact details

6. Documents Scolaires / School Documents (5%)

Students often lose them during transport between cities.

  • Tip: Always travel with certified copies, keep originals secure at home

7. Passeports / Passports (4%)

Losing a passport is particularly stressful. The replacement process at DGSN can take months.

  • Recovery rate: 60% — passports are almost always turned in to authorities
  • Tip: Report immediately on WeFoundIt + embassy/consulate if you're abroad

8. Permis de Conduire / Driver's License (4%)

Often lost alongside wallets or during roadside checks.

  • Tip: Photograph both sides and store digitally

9. Bijoux / Jewelry (3%)

Rings, necklaces, bracelets — often lost at beaches, hotels, or during sports.

  • Recovery rate: 22% — hardest category to recover
  • Tip: Detailed descriptions with photos dramatically increase match chances

  • Tip: Register serial numbers on WeFoundIt for instant matching
